LABOUR LEADERS TRAINED ON EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP

Lagos State on Monday insisted that various union leaders in the State must be trained to understand the daunting task of governance such that theleaders can be very realistic and fair in their expectations from government.

According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson Oke, there is the need for labour leaders in Lagos State to always follow the path of dialogue in conflict resolution as against considering the option of embarking on industrial action, stressing that the leaders must always “jaw-jaw” instead of “war-war”.

Dr. Benson Oke stated this on Monday while declaring open training on “Leadership Development and Organisational Effectiveness,” for labour leadersheld in Ikeja, Lagos, commending the industrial harmony enjoyed under the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in the last three and half years.

While noting that it was heartwarming that the present administration in Lagos State is the first dispensation that did not experience any industrial action by labour unions, he attributed the feat to the creative thinking, innovativeness, approach to union issues and management of situations by the leadershipof the State.

Dr. Benson Oke informed the participants that the training would further bring the State government and union leaders together in the overall interest of advancing the Lagos State public service and improved welfare for all civil servants.

He argued that the Lagos State Public Service, the organised labour and trade unions would benefit from the work and example of labour leaders who could inspire their followers to support beneficial policies.

Speaking on the topic of the training, the Commissioner said, “trained, visionary and strong leaders will beneficially impact their organisations by being able to inspire the people in the organisation to enthusiastically buy into the vision crafted by the leadership”.

“There is also the need for excellent communications and relational skills to form part of the fabric of any leadership development strategy. In addition, the promotion and propagation of an organisation’s vision and mission calls for the presence of excellent communications and relational skills in theleaders of organisations”, he added.

He, therefore, expressed hope that the training would realise its objectives such that the participants would be transformed into better labour unionleaders capable of enhancing service delivery across all facets of human endeavour.
